Pathwise and Ohio First Definitions

Pathwise is a training program in which the four domains and nineteen criteria are introduced to the mentor. In Pathwise Training, mentors learn how to observe teachers, collect data, categorize the evidence into the four domains and nineteen criteria, develop summary statements, and guide reflective thinking of the beginning teacher.

Ohio First is a curriculum of ten events that is followed by the beginning teacher with the assistance of the mentor. Two of the events are Pathwise observations. The mentor uses the evidence gleaned from the observations and pre/post conferences to identify the strengths and area in need of professional development for the beginning teacher. The beginning teacher, working with his/her mentor, develops an improvement plan following the process of "Plan, Teacher, Reflect, and Apply". The other eight events in Ohio First provide embedded classroom experiences that allow the mentor to provide guidance and support to the beginning teacher to develop his/her classroom practices.
