Edgewood City School District Conducts Hazardous Materials Table Top Exercise
Wednesday, March 8, 2017

Through the support from the Butler County Educational Service Center (BCESC), Edgewood City School District conducted a Hazardous Materials Table Top Exercise in January 2017. In the exercise, Edgewood High School and Edgewood School District tested the District’s Emergency Operations Plan; particularly, Shelter in Place, Communications, Evacuation, and Student Reunification.

Over 60 participants were at the exercise, including emergency responders from Butler County law enforcement, fire departments, State and County Emergency Management Agencies, and other Butler County School Districts. The exercise identified areas of improvement that will be applied to future planning considerations and training opportunities. This is an important step in creating a comprehensive emergency management program for all schools and districts in Butler County.

With the evolving Administrative Code for School plans and exercises, all schools and districts are required to establish an exercise cycle. This is a critical program in order to establish comprehensive emergency management plans. By exercising the District/School plans, staff and administrators can build consensus and confidence in responding to emergencies.

More exercises are planned for 2017 with the schools and districts and the Butler County ESC will support all the districts in developing a comprehensive emergency management program.
