What is the Parent Project?

The Parent Project® is a 10-week parent education and support program designed specifically for parents of strong-willed or out-of-control adolescent children. The curriculum teaches concrete identification, prevention, and intervention strategies for destructive adolescent behaviors (poor school attendance and performance, alcohol and other drug use, gangs, runaways, and violent teens, etc.).

Why the Parent Project®?

  • Twenty-five years in development, the Parent Project® is the only course of its kind.
  • Over 500,000 families have attended Parent Project® classes nationwide
  • The Parent Project® is the largest court-mandated juvenile diversion program in the country.
  • It has a proven track record - the Parent Project® reduced juvenile crime by 1/3, while significantly increasing both school attendance and performance. In 2015, the Butler County Parent Project was evaluated by Miami University. You can read the full report here. In summary, the report stated: "On a broad scale, the data show that the Parent Project has been having a positive effect on both adolescents and parents alike."
  • The Parent Project® was recognized by the American Bar Association as the strongest parent-involvement program for adjudicated youth in the nation.
  • Over 1/3 of the OJJDP funded, Youth Gang Prevention and Intervention Programs use the Parent Project® Model.

Who Should Attend?

  • The parent/guardian who has primary day-to-day responsibility for supervision of strong-willed, out of control adolescents; ideally both parents attend the program.
  • Parents or caregivers who have a desire to learn new ways to build a stronger relationship with their teen and manage challenging behaviors.
NEW - Children ages 12 - 16 are asked to attend with parents to participate in the WhyTry Program.

How Does it Work?

  • Parents attend and learn, in a classroom setting, to manage teen behavior problems at home.
  • The activity-based 216-page workbook “A Parent’s Guide to Destructive Adolescent Behavior” is available only to program participants.
  • Parents meet one night a week. The first 6 weeks are three hour sessions and the last 4 weeks are two hour sessions.
  • Parent support groups are formed using the UCLA, Self-Help Support Group model.
  • Program is taught by community members and educators who have completed the forty-hour Parent Project® facilitator training.

What Is Expected of Parents/Caregivers & Children Who Participate?

Program, dinner and supplies are FREE. Participants are expected to attend each session and complete assignments during the week. Replacement fee for workbook is $25.

When and Where Is the next Parent Project®/Why Try Session?

A new 10-week session begins almost every month. Sessions are held at locations throughout Butler County.

    Tuesday, October 4 - December 6, 2017, 6 - 9 PM (6 weeks) & 6 - 8 (4 weeks)
    Free childcare provided for ages 3-11
