Home Schooling Notification
Please consult the Ohio Department of Education for the most comprehensive and up-to-date information.
In Ohio, a parent/guardian interested in educating his/her child of compulsory school age at home may request that the child be excused from compulsory school attendance (under section 3321.04 (A)(2) of the Ohio Revised Code) for home education purposes. Home school education is educational delivery directed by the parent or guardian of a child who has been excused from attending school. Under this option, the parent/guardian selects the curriculum and education materials and takes responsibility for educating the child. There is no state financial assistance for families who choose this option.
Butler County Educational Service Center (BCESC) assists the following school districts in processing their home education notifications; Lakota, Madison and New Miami. Each district superintendent then issues excuses from compulsory attendance for students residing in their districts after BCESC has received and processed all notification materials. We are pleased to answer any questions that you may have about this process.
If you reside in another Butler County district, please contact your district board office directly.
Home School Process
Thank you for your inquiry regarding home school education. If you elect to provide home education for your child and reside in the Lakota, Madison or New Miami school district, please submit the following to Butler County Educational Service Center, 400 North Erie Blvd, Suite A, Hamilton, OH 45011:
- A completed and signed Home Education Notification Form or other document which includes all listed required items of information.
- A brief outline of the intended curriculum and a list of textbooks to be used.
- An Academic Assessment Report. Option #1 - standardized testing or Option #2 - narrative reporting. (This report is not required for first-year home school students).
- Once we receive your notification, BCESC will review it within 14 days. If everything is in order and all sections are correctly completed, your district superintendent will then forward the excuse from compulsory attendance to you which will be applicable for one school year.
