GIFTED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Start Seeing and Serving Underserved Gifted Students: 50 Strategies for Equity and Excellence
by Jennifer Richotte Ph.D, Chin-Wen Lee, Ph.D, and Amy Graefe, Ph.D;
Start Date: February 10, 2020
End Date: March 20, 2020
This is a six week online course.
One critical issue in education is the underrepresentation of students from specific populations in our gifted programming. These students include:
  • English language learners
  • Twice-exceptional students
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse students
  • Economically disadvantaged students
This book study will provide participants with a variety of flexible tools to nurture the academic and affective growth of their gifted students from traditionally underserved populations. Over fifty strategies are outlined within five chapters to help teachers and administrators:
  • Recognize the strengths of underserved gifted learners
  • Become aware of implicit biases and the effects on teaching
  • Create a culturally responsive learning environment
  • Provide high-quality challenging instruction
  • Advocate for gifted students on a micro and macro scale
  • Understand the academic, social, and emotional needs of underserved gifted students
This 15 contact hour book study will provide participants an opportunity to examine and improve their own practices with underserved gifted students. Participants will independently read the text, complete reflections connecting the text and their practice, and have on-line discussions with other participants.
