Let's Do This! August Construction Camp
Tuesday, June 6, 2017
The Butler County Educational Service Center (BCESC), in partnership with Spirit of Construction Foundation, present Let’s Do This, this year’s Construction Camp for children ages 11 - 14 this summer. The camp is at Butler Tech D. Russel Lee Campus, August 7-11 from 9 AM - 3 PM.
“During the Let’s Do This construction camp, students with get a hands-on experience to introduce concepts of construction in a fun and interactive way. Students will construct wheelchair accessible picnic tables that will then be donated to the Hamilton Parks Conservancy,” said Dave Baker, BCESC consultant and a former Industrial Arts Instructor.
Each camper receives a tool case filled with a set of tools to use during the camp and then is theirs to take home when the camp ends. With instruction and guidance from Baker, and with the support from BCESC staff, campers are instructed in tool identification, use, and safety. The campers work in teams to construct items from start to finish learning first-hand construction skills and teamwork.
Funds from a grant BCESC received from the Spirit of Construction Foundation (SOC) allows them to provide this program. The SOC Foundation grant is awarded to support efforts to engage students of a specific age group, encouraging them to stay in school, succeed in math, science, and language classes, and consider all options available with a career in construction.
BCESC Curriculum Director, Georgine Bowman said,
“We are thrilled the Spirit of Construction Foundation once again helped fund the Let’s Do This Construction Camp with their generous $5,400 grant.. Their efforts provide so much for the students, exposing them to the construction industry and providing them a great opportunity to give back to families in our community. This camp would not be possible without the funds from the SOC Foundation.”
