blog On Friday, October 13, the Butler County Educational Service Center (BCESC) is inviting 600 local eighth grade students to attend Discover STEM, a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Conference.

Held at Miami University Middletown, the BCESC is able to offer the conference at no charge to the students or to the school districts through grant and sponsorship funds from local businesses and educational institutions including Miami University Middletown, ThyssenKrupp-Bilstein, Rhinestahl AMG, University of Dayton, Proforma, Megen Construction, Denier Electric, Messer Construction, Cincinnati Test Systems, The Spirit of Construction Foundation, and others.

“The one-day Discover STEM conference will provide these 600+ eighth grade students with a College and Career Fair, featuring area businesses and educational institutions that have a STEM focus, and interactive STEM sessions/workshops for direct exposure to areas of student interest,” said Chris Brown, BCESC Superintendent.

The goal of the BCESC Discover STEM conference is to make a positive difference in the lives of young men and women, especially as they think about STEM-related careers. The College and Career Fair will allow the students to learn directly from industry professionals what a specific career and/or educational pathway might be like for them, what they need to focus on in their studies to prepare, and what goals they need to focus on to succeed.

The interactive workshops that the students attend will provide them with direct hands-on exposure and spark an interest in many STEM-related technologies, industries and educational pathways including: health and medical sciences, robotics technology, construction engineering, agricultural, architectural, and more.

“The Butler County ESC believes it is an important experience for students to gain STEM exposure as they begin to make decisions about their high school pathways,” said Georgine Bowman, BCESC Curriculum Director. “Therefore, the BCESC is providing the Discover STEM conference at no-cost to the participating districts. The success of Discover STEM is entirely dependent on sponsorship funds and participation from local educational institutions and businesses.”

Miami University, Denier Electric, University of Dayton, Turner Construction, ThyssenKrupp-Bilstein, and Rhinestahl AMG are among the educational institutions and businesses who are participating in the college and career fair.
