For the past several years, the Thermo-Fisher Scientific Company (article here) has sponsored an annual STEM Design Challenge for middle school students. In neighboring states the competition begins at the local level and the top performers advance and compete at a state level! Each year there is a different challenge for students to address. On YouTube there are several examples of what the competition looks like. It may be most helpful to view the clip below (and additional clips on YouTube), however, please know the specific challenge your teams will be facing will be emailed to you (the advisor) as soon as the official entry form has been received by Dave Baker.

EXAMPLES: https://youtu.be/kXv4z7gTQoI

Schools may enter up to five teams per middle school (6th, 7th, and/or 8th grade teams) and must include a faculty advisor(s). The faculty advisor(s) must submit the attached entry form to Dave Baker (e-mail to bakerd@bcec.org) to officially be entered on a first come, first served basis.

The Information webinar for faculty advisor(s) is scheduled for MONDAY, JANUARY 22 at 3:30 PM. It will be presented by Mr. Robert Marshall of Thermo Fisher Scientific, 300 Industry Drive, Pittsburg, PA 15275. Mr. Marshall will contact each faculty advisor by email with the Webinar contact number, code and directions. Please contact Dave Baker (office 513-896-2354 or cell 740-815-7913) If you are entered and do not receive the webinar email.

Faculty advisors can begin meeting with their teams any time after the January 22 Webinar.

K’nex Kits will be furnished for the competition but must be returned to BSESC for future contests. They will be collected after the completion on Friday, February 23. Dave Baker will deliver the kits to your school (prior to the faculty advisor webinar) on Thursday or Friday, January 18 or 19 during the school day. Please look over the materials and prepare any questions you may have prior to the January 22 Webinar.

Final competition is scheduled for Friday, February 23, 8:30am – 12:00 noon at the Harrison High School Sports Arena. Awards will be presented to the top performing teams between 11:30am and 12:00 noon at the conclusion of the judging.
