Ohio Step Up to Quality
In recognition of a commitment to quality and an ongoing dedication to the learning and development of children, the Butler County Educational Service Center (BCESC) Early Childhood Staff and Leadership Team is excited to announce another 5-Star rating for their Early Learning Programs. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) recently awarded the Early Learning Preschool Classrooms in the Southwest Local School District (SLSD) a 5-Star rating.

Southwest Local School District is located in Hamilton County. Chris Brown, BCESC Superintendent, was previously superintendent at SLSD.

“When I left Southwest Schools for BCESC, I quickly realized my home district would benefit from the ESC Early Learning team. Not only would the Southwest preschool aged children be introduced to a high-quality education, they would also be taught by a group of individuals dedicated to teaching the whole child. I’m proud of our relationship with Southwest Local Schools and I look forward to more 5-star ratings,” said Chris Brown, BCESC Superintendent.

In the Southwest Local School District, the BCESC has Early Learning Preschool Classrooms in Harrison Elementary and Whitewater Valley Elementary.

“Congratulations to our Early Learning teams at Southwest Local Schools on the rating of 5-Stars by the Ohio Department of Education! We are proud of our continued collaboration with our school districts, both in and out of Butler County, and of the commitment and effort of our entire preschool team in providing high quality preschool education services.” said Sissy Rasmussen, BCESC Early Childhood Special Education Director.

Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) is a single measure of quality for preschool classrooms in the State of Ohio. The ODE Consultant monitored the program's use of child data to inform instruction, staff education and ongoing training, parent and community engagement, and monitored health visits for children. The purpose of SUTQ is to encourage high quality preschools in Ohio that support the whole child so they are ready for kindergarten and beyond.

In addition to meeting all standards of a four-star rating, programs with five stars may also:

Have lower staff/child ratios.
+Use child assessment results to plan activities that best support learning and development goals for each child.
+Share assessment results and create goals for children.
+Develop plans to support children as they transition to a new classroom or educational setting.
+Work with other organizations or businesses within the community to support children and their families.
+Have an active and organized parent volunteer group.
+Use input from families and community partners’ inform the program’s continuous improvement process.
+Have accreditation by an approved organization.

“Butler County ESC’s preschools establish the important foundational building blocks that help students set the path for a successful academic career in their school district and beyond. The top level 5-star rating confirms what we've known about our Early Learning teams: they provide a high-quality entrance for our students to school based services,” said Rasmussen.

The BCESC partners with school districts in Butler County, Ohio and the southwest Ohio region in educating young children. The BCESC Early Childhood team and the services they provide help all preschool and Head Start students meet the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive needs of each child.
