Preble County Head Start Program Expands

Preble County's Head Start program is continuing to expand as a new classroom opens in Camden.

This is the sixth classroom to open in Preble County under Head Start, a federally-funded program that offers preschool classes to families in need.

The new classroom in Camden comes a year after another Head Start classroom opened within the Twin Valley South school district, according to Christi Reveal, site manager for Preble County Head Start.

Expanding the program allows kids to go to preschool in their own communities, alongside students they'll see in kindergarten, Reveal said.

"They love it," said Kateland Fields, whose daughter and son attend one of the preschool classes offered in Camden. "And they love their teacher. They love all of their classmates."

Fields said she used to take her children to a daycare in Eaton before the Head Start classroom opened closer to home.

"It's definitely convenient, especially being a working parent," Fields said. "You know they're safe. They're in your neighborhood."

The Camden facility hosts two half-day preschool classes, each with 17 students, Reveal said.

The new classroom and playground were included in Preble County Head Start's annual budget of $1.2 million of federal funding, she added.

"If we're in the community, if a parent has a day off work, or is able to come, we invite parents to come help volunteer, we do parent meetings," Reveal said.

Going forward, the goal is to expand class hours and accept more students, Reveal said.

"At an early age, a lot of them don't really have the opportunity to play with other kids and to learn outside of the home," Fields said of the program. "So to me, it's important for them to get that kind of interaction."

Preble County Head Start is working to get additional funding approved to open a second classroom in Camden next year, Reveal said, which will allow the facility to run two preschool classes simultaneously, each for a full school day.
